The Northgate-Lake City Kiwanis Club comes from a firm foundation and a long tradition. The commitment to serve children and the community began with the chartering of the club on March 8, 1955 with 45 members.

Some of the service club's early activities included sponsoring a Princess contestant for Seafair; a custom hot-rod auto show; and a theater showing of "Around the World in 80 Days" for fund-raising. Scholarships were presented to outstanding senior high school students for several years. Golf tournaments were, and are, held for funds and fun.

Many of the club's original projects are still ongoing. We value our participation with Northwest School for the Hearing Impaired; Northgate Elementary School; Nightwatch (a street ministry for the homeless); and Camp Casey (a one-week camp for physically challenged children sponsored by North Central Kiwanis).

As times have changed, our scope has broadened. We support the International Kiwanis' aim to eliminate Iodine Deficiency Disorders worldwide. There also is an increased emphasis on promoting childhood safety and well-being. Also, women are active members in Kiwanis now, not auxiliaries. We are honored to have Mary Freeman continuing as an active member with us. She is the wife of Zan Freeman, one of our club's charter members and a Past-Lt. Governor and Governor of Kiwanis' Pacific Northwest District.

Northgate-Lake City Kiwanis President Alida Fretz reports that our recent estate sale fundraiser has generated more than $1,133 - a figure that could go even higher should the remaining items get sold. The proceeds from the sale will benefit the Northwest School for Hearing Impaired Children and Nightwatch.
